Favorite Software

This is some of my favorite software. I'm not affiliated with the makers of any of these products...just a happy user/customer.

Free Software

7-Zip - An open source compression program that supports most popular formats.

ADInfo - Active Directory reporting tool. The basic version is free. There is also a paid version that has more features.

Advanced IP Scanner - Network scanner allowing you to quickly retrieve information about network devices and get access to their various resources such as shared folders, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, RDP, and Radmin.

Audacity - Free, open source, cross-platform software for recording and editing sounds.

Ekahau Heatmapper - A great tool for mapping Wi-Fi coverage.

Etcher - An open source cross-platform tool for burning images to SD cards and USB drives.

FileZilla - Open source FTP software. A multi-platform client and a Windows-only server are available.

GNS3 - A multi-platform network simulator that lets you build out networks for testing configurations or practicing your skills without the need for any hardware.

GNS3 Workbench - An excellent VMware appliance that combines Linux Mint, GNS3, and a selection of pre-configured networking exercises to help you practice your skills.

iPerf - A cross-platform tool for measuring throughput between hosts on a network.

mRemoteNG - An open source, tabbed, multi-protocol, remote connections manager. Most notably, it supports Telnet, SSH, and RDP.

Notepad++ - My favorite text editor. It's lightning fast, endlessly customizable with plugins, and doesn't choke on large, multi-GB log files like Windows Notepad.

paint.net -  Image editing software. It won't replace Photoshop for a professional, but it's great for basic image editing.

PuTTY - Probably the most popular terminal emulator in the world. No introduction needed.

Smoothmouse - An OSX utility that gets rid of  the sluggish mouse cursor feel and makes it more "Windows-like."

Tera Term - Another good terminal emulator.

Tftpd32 - My favorite TFTP server software.

VirtualBox - Open source, cross-platform virtualization software.

VLC media player - My favorite media player. Capable of playing just anything.

VMware Player - Free for non-commercial use. Essentially a stripped-down version of VMware workstation.

WinSCP - An open source SFTP, FTP, WebDAV, and SCP client.

Wireshark - Excellent packet capture software.

Paid Software

CatTools - Network configuration automation tool. Primarily used for network device configuration backups.

Cathode - A fun retro-themed OSX terminal emulator - complete with screen curvature, burn-in, scan-lines, and transparency effects. While it certainly doesn't do anything to increase productivity, it brings a smile to my face every time I use it.

Sapien PowerShell Studio - A PowerShell ISE (Integrated Scripting Environment) that features a great editor, advanced debugging capabilities, as well as the ability to build GUI utilities, executables, and installers, among other things. It's like Visual Studio, but with PowerShell code.

SecureCRT - My favorite terminal emulator.

Snagit - My favorite screenshot software.

VMware Fusion Pro - My favorite OSX-based virtualization software.

VMware Workstation - My favorite Windows-based virtualization software.
